Memoir creep is real. It starts innocently enough. You sit down to write a business book based on your experience, your expertise, your hard-won lessons, and your professional journey. Then suddenly Chapter 1 begins with your grandmother’s kitchen, your first job, your worst boss, your divorce, your dog, your spiritual awakening, and the time you realized spreadsheets could ruin a person’s soul. Some of that may be meaningful. Some of it may even be interesting. But that does not automatically make it useful to your reader. And if you are writing a business book, useful matters more than personal.

Your Story Is Not the Whole Book

Your experience matters. It gives your book credibility, personality, and authority. But your life story is not the same thing as a business book. A memoir is centered on the author’s journey. A business book is centered on the reader’s problem. That difference matters.

In a memoir, readers come to understand you. In a business book, readers come to understand something they need to do, change, solve, improve, or survive. Your story can support that goal, but it should not hijack it.

The Reader Did Not Buy Your Book to Admire Your Timeline

This sounds harsh, but it is useful to know that most readers are not there for your full history, they are there because they have a problem. They want to lead better, sell better, communicate better, manage money better, build a stronger team, survive burnout, grow their business, fix a process, or avoid making the expensive mistakes you already made. That is where your experience becomes a valuable teaching tool.

Extract the Lesson, Then Build Around It

When you use a personal story in a business book, ask one question first: What is this story teaching? If the answer is unclear, the story probably does not belong in your book. A strong business book does not dump experience onto the page and hope the reader finds meaning. It extracts the lesson and builds the section around that lesson.

Instead of writing:

“Here is everything that happened to me.”

Try:

“Here is the mistake I made, what it taught me, and how you can avoid it.”

That shift turns personal experience into reader value.

Your Story Should Serve the Reader

Every story in your business book should have a job. It can:

Introduce a problem

Show a mistake

Demonstrate a turning point

Prove why your method works

Make an abstract idea easier to understand

Help the reader feel less alone

What it should not do is wander around the chapter wearing a velvet cape and demanding applause. Yes, your story may be dramatic. Yes, it may be meaningful. Yes, it may explain why you care. But if it does not help the reader understand the point faster, deeper, or more clearly, it may belong somewhere else.

Structure the Book Around the Reader’s Journey

A business book should not usually follow your life in chronological order. It should follow the reader’s learning path. That means organizing the book around what the reader needs to understand first, second, third, and fourth. For example:

What problem are they facing?

Why does that problem matter?

What mistakes are they likely making?

What do they need to understand differently?

What steps should they take?

How can they apply the lesson?

That structure keeps the book useful. Your stories can appear inside that structure, but they should not become the structure.

Memoir Creep Usually Comes From Good Intentions

Most business owners do not overload their books with personal history because they are self-absorbed monsters lurking in the author swamp. They do it because they want to be authentic. They want the reader to understand where they are coming from. They want to show that they have lived the lessons they teach. That is good. But authenticity without structure becomes rambling. A business book needs both personality and purpose.

Turn “This Happened to Me” Into “Here’s What This Means for You”

This is the magic move. After every personal story, add the bridge. Not a vague reflection. Not a dramatic sigh. A clear teaching connection. Ask:

What did I learn?

What mistake does this reveal?

What pattern should the reader notice?

What should the reader do differently?

How does this connect to the chapter promise?

That bridge is what turns story into instruction. Without it, the reader is left thinking, “Okay… and?” That is not the reaction we want.

Keep the Personal Parts, But Make Them Earn Their Place

You do not need to strip all personality from your book. Please don’t. Nobody wants to read a business book that sounds like it was assembled by an expert with unresolved childhood issues. Your stories are part of what make your book yours. But each story needs to earn its space. Before keeping a story, ask:

Does this support the chapter’s main point?

Does it help the reader understand the lesson?

Could this be shorter?

Am I including this because it helps the reader—or because I like telling it?

That last question is the sneaky little gremlin that likes to sneak in, but don't let it.

A Business Book Is Built From Lessons, Not Just Events

Your experience is raw material. The book is what you build from it. If you simply record what happened, you have a personal history. If you organize what happened into lessons, frameworks, examples, warnings, steps, and tools, you have a business book. That is the difference. Your life gave you the material. Your job as the author is to shape it into something useful.

Final Thought

Your story matters. But in a business book, it matters most when it helps someone else. The goal is not to prove that you have lived an interesting life. The goal is to help the reader make better decisions because of what you have learned. That is how experience becomes expertise. That is how a personal story becomes a teaching tool. And that is how a business book becomes more than a long, wandering autobiography wearing a blazer.

If you’re a business owner ready to turn your experience into a book that actually helps people, Business Author Boot Camp was built for you. We help you shape your ideas, stories, lessons, and expertise into a purposeful, well-structured book with a clear benefit for your reader.

Schedule a consultation, and we’ll help you bring your business book to market—and show you how to use it as a tool to support, promote, and grow your business.

Key Takeaways:

Identify the purpose and premise of your business book.

Understand your target audience's needs and tailor your book accordingly.

Choose the manuscript creation method that suits you best, whether it's working with a ghostwriter, writing coach, or going solo.

Explore different publishing options and find the right publisher for your book.

Create a detailed outline or blueprint to guide your writing process.

Determine Your Premise

Before you embark on the journey of writing your business book, it is crucial to determine its premise. This involves delving into the purpose of writing a book and identifying the impetus behind your desire to share your knowledge and expertise. Evaluating your experience and unique perspective will enable you to provide fresh insights on relevant topics.

Furthermore, you must understand and address your audience's needs. Each reader has specific requirements and expectations, and tailoring your book to meet those needs will enhance its value. By identifying your audience and their expectations, you can align your content accordingly, ensuring that your book resonates deeply with your readers.

Understanding the purpose of your book, evaluating your experiences, and determining your audience's needs are fundamental steps that lay the groundwork for a successful business book. By doing so, you are setting yourself up for a writing journey that is both fulfilling for you and beneficial for your readers.

Identifying the Purpose

When considering the purpose of writing a book, reflect on the goals you aim to achieve through your publication. Are you looking to establish yourself as an expert in your field? Do you want to provide practical guidance to other professionals? Are you seeking to inspire and motivate entrepreneurs? By clarifying your purpose, you can craft a focused and impactful message that will resonate with your audience.

Evaluating Your Experience

Your experiences carry immense value and can serve as a guiding force in your writing. Reflect on the challenges you have faced, the lessons you have learned, and the successes you have achieved. By drawing from your own experiences, you bring authenticity and unique insights to your book, making it more relatable and valuable to your readers.

Understanding Your Audience's Needs

To connect with your readers and address their specific needs, it is crucial to understand their pain points, challenges, and aspirations. Conducting market research, engaging with your target audience, and analyzing their feedback can provide valuable insights into their desires and expectations. By addressing these needs directly, you can create a book that offers practical solutions and tangible benefits to your readers.

Key Considerations

Actions to Take

Evaluate your motivation and purpose

Reflect on the goals you aim to achieve through your book and clarify your purpose as an author.

Draw from your experiences

Identify the unique knowledge and insights derived from your own experiences to enrich your book.

Conduct market research

Gain a deep understanding of your audience's needs, pain points, and aspirations through market research and engagement.

Address your audience's needs

Tailor your book's content to directly address the specific needs and desires of your readers, offering practical solutions and valuable insights.

Determine Your Manuscript Preferences

When it comes to writing a business book, you have options for how to create the manuscript. Many authors prefer to work with a ghostwriter who can turn their ideas into appealing text. Ghostwriting allows you to collaborate with a skilled professional who will bring your vision to life while ensuring a polished and cohesive manuscript.

If you prefer a more hands-on approach, you may choose to work with a writing coach who can provide guidance and support throughout the writing process. A writing coach can offer valuable feedback, help you refine your ideas, and assist with structuring your book for maximum impact.

Another option is to work with a book doctor, who specializes in revising and improving existing manuscripts. A book doctor can help you fine-tune your writing style, strengthen your book's structure, and ensure that your message resonates with your target audience.

Consider your own preferences, budget, and timeline when deciding which method suits you best. Whether you choose ghostwriting, a writing coach, or a book doctor, having professional support can significantly enhance the quality and effectiveness of your business book.

Find Your Book Publisher

Now that you have completed your manuscript, it's time to explore the different publishing options for your business book. Depending on your preferences and goals, you can choose between traditional publishing, self-publishing, or independent publishing. Each option offers its own advantages and considerations.

Traditional Publishing

Traditional publishing involves submitting your manuscript to established publishing houses that follow a traditional process of book production and distribution. If your goal is to have your book published by a well-known publishing company and have access to their established distribution networks, traditional publishing may be the route for you. Keep in mind that traditional publishers typically have specific genre and content preferences and may require a literary agent to represent your work.

Self-publishing

Self-publishing allows you to have complete control over the publishing process. With self-publishing, you are responsible for editing, formatting, cover design, and distribution. Self-publishing platforms like Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) and IngramSpark provide tools and services to make the process more accessible. This option gives you the freedom to set your own timeline and retain a higher percentage of royalties. However, it also means taking on the marketing and promotion of your book yourself.

Independent Publishing

Independent publishing falls between traditional publishing and self-publishing. Independent publishers are smaller publishing houses that offer a more personalized experience compared to traditional publishers. They may have specific niche focuses or be dedicated to promoting diverse voices. Independent publishing can give you more creative control over your book while providing some marketing support. Research and reach out to independent publishers that align with your book's genre and target audience.

When deciding which publishing path to pursue, consider factors such as your creative vision, the level of control you desire, the distribution options available, and the promotional support you need. Take the time to research and understand the publishing landscape in your genre or industry before making a decision. Keep in mind that regardless of the publishing option you choose, effective book promotion is essential for success.

Publishing Options Comparison

Publishing Option

Advantages

Considerations

Traditional Publishing

Access to established distribution networks
Professional editing and design
Increased exposure through reputable publishing house

Selective acceptance process
Need for a literary agent (in many cases)
Potentially longer production timeline

Self-publishing

Complete creative control
Quick publication timeline
Higher percentage of royalties

Requires self-promotion and marketing efforts
Responsibility for editing
Less established distribution networks

Independent Publishing

Personalized experience
Some marketing support
Opportunity for creative collaboration

Smaller distribution networks
Varies by publisher in terms of offerings
May have specific genre preferences

Once you've determined the publishing option that aligns with your goals and preferences, you can take the necessary steps to distribute your book and plan promotional activities accordingly. Remember, each publishing option offers unique opportunities, so choose the one that best suits your needs to bring your business book to the readers who will benefit most from your expertise.

Build Your Outline or Blueprint

Before diving into writing your business book, it's essential to create an outline or blueprint. This step is crucial in ensuring that your book's chapters contribute intentionally to its overall structure. By starting with a chapter-by-chapter outline, you can outline the main points and ideas for each section.

Creating an outline allows you to organize your thoughts and ensure a logical flow throughout your book. It serves as a roadmap, guiding you through the writing process and helping you stay focused on your main objectives. A well-structured outline will help you maintain clarity and coherence, making it easier for readers to follow your ideas.

Once you've outlined your chapters, consider creating a detailed Master Book Plan. This plan provides a more comprehensive overview of your entire book and can include additional details such as character descriptions, research materials, and writing strategies. Your Master Book Plan will serve as a valuable resource, helping you stay on track and navigate each stage of the publishing process.

Remember, your outline and Master Book Plan are not set in stone. They can evolve and change as you progress with your writing. Keep them flexible, allowing room for new ideas and adjustments. Continuously refer to your outline and Master Book Plan as you write to ensure that your book remains coherent and aligned with your initial vision.

Build a Promotional Plan

Building a promotional plan is crucial to the success of your business book. With a well-thought-out promotional plan, you can generate buzz and attract readers to your book. Start developing your plan early on, even before the manuscript is finished, to ensure a comprehensive and effective strategy.

Reader Reviewer Plan

An essential component of your promotional plan is a reader reviewer plan. By reaching out to influential readers in your target audience, you can secure honest reviews that help build credibility and attract new readers. Consider offering advance copies of your book to trusted individuals who can provide authentic feedback.

Book Award Submission Plan

Submitting your book for awards is an excellent way to gain recognition and distinguish yourself from other authors. Research relevant book awards in your genre or industry and develop a submission plan. Adhering to award guidelines and deadlines is crucial, so be sure to plan accordingly.

PR Placement Campaigns

Gaining media coverage through PR placement campaigns can significantly enhance your book's visibility. Craft compelling press releases and media pitches that highlight the unique aspects of your book. Strengthen relationships with journalists and industry influencers who can help promote your book to a wider audience.

Best Seller Campaigns

Reaching best-seller status can significantly boost your book's success and visibility. Develop a best seller campaign that includes targeted marketing efforts, such as promoting your book through social media, offering limited-time discounts or bonuses, and leveraging endorsements from well-known figures in your industry.

Promotional Plan Components

Description

Reader Reviewer Plan

Secure honest reviews from influential readers to build credibility.

Book Award Submission Plan

Submit your book for relevant awards to gain recognition.

PR Placement Campaigns

Gain media coverage and increase visibility through effective PR campaigns.

Best Seller Campaigns

Promote your book strategically to achieve best-seller status.

Developing a comprehensive promotional plan that incorporates reader reviewer plans, book award submissions, PR placement campaigns, and best seller campaigns will help ensure the success of your business book. Start early, stay organized, and engage with your target audience to generate interest and excitement about your book.

Create a Writing Schedule

When writing your business book, it's crucial to establish a disciplined writing schedule to maintain productivity and focus. By allocating dedicated time for writing, you ensure that progress is made consistently. Consider finding a writing location that suits your preferences, preferably one with minimal distractions. Setting specific time slots for writing or establishing a word count goal for each session provides structure and measurable milestones to keep you motivated throughout the writing process.

Know Your Deadlines

To ensure the smooth progress of your business book, it is imperative that you are aware of and adhere to the publishing deadlines. Meeting these deadlines is crucial for the success of your book, as it allows your distribution team to pitch your book to retailers effectively. By providing a projected launch date, your team can strategize and promote your book to potential readers and buyers. Failing to meet these deadlines may result in missed opportunities for distribution and promotion.

"Deadlines aren't meant to be stressful; they're meant to give you enough time to plan, execute, and succeed." - Chris Darius

Throughout the book publishing process, you will encounter various deadlines that mark significant milestones. These deadlines include completing the manuscript, submitting it to the publisher, approving the final edits and design, and preparing for the book's release. Each deadline plays a crucial role in ensuring that your book reaches its target audience effectively.

Working closely with your publisher and distribution team, you can develop a clear timeline that outlines the specific deadlines for each stage of the publishing process. This collaboration will help you stay organized and enable your team to plan the necessary promotional activities.

Remember, understanding and meeting your publishing deadlines is not just important for the distribution and promotion of your book, but also for your long-term success as an author. By achieving your publishing goals and delivering your book on time, you establish credibility, build trust with your readers, and open doors for future writing opportunities.

Publishing Deadlines Checklist

Actions

Manuscript Completion

Submit the final manuscript to the publisher.

Edits and Revisions

Review and approve edits and revisions.

Cover and Design Approval

Provide feedback and approve the book cover and design.

Final Proofreading

Thoroughly proofread the final version for errors.

Printing

Ensure the book is printed and bound successfully.

Distribution and Promotion

Promote the book through various channels and to retailers.

Book Launch

Celebrate the release of your business book!

Writing a successful business book requires a combination of strategies and approaches. As an aspiring author, it's essential to build belief in yourself and overcome any negative thoughts or actions that may hinder your progress. Trust in your abilities and embrace the journey ahead.

Choosing the right topic is crucial. Select a subject that aligns with your passion and expertise. When you write about what you know and love, it will resonate with your readers and make the writing process more enjoyable and fulfilling.

Take the time to organize your thoughts, conduct research, and create an outline. This will serve as a roadmap for your writing journey and keep you focused as you dive into each chapter.

During the drafting stage, let your creativity flow. Don't worry about perfection; just get your ideas on paper. Allow yourself to experiment with different writing styles and structures. Remember, the goal is to create a rough draft that you can refine and polish later.

Revising is where the magic happens. Take a critical look at your manuscript and analyze its strengths and weaknesses. Refine your ideas, restructure your chapters, and ensure a smooth flow of information. Consider seeking feedback from trusted beta readers or peers who can provide valuable insights.

Once you've revised your manuscript, it's time to focus on proofreading and editing. Pay attention to grammar, spelling, punctuation, and overall clarity. It's crucial to have a polished final product that delivers your message effectively to your audience.

"Writing a book is an adventure. To begin with, it is a toy and an amusement; then it becomes a mistress, and then it becomes a master, and then a tyrant. The last phase is that just as you are about to be reconciled to your servitude, you kill the monster, and fling him out to the public." - Winston Churchill

Stay focused, persevere through the obstacles, and celebrate each milestone along the way.
In today's fast-paced business world, writing a book can be a valuable tool for establishing credibility, building your personal brand, and sharing your expertise with a wider audience. However, writing a book can be a daunting task, especially for busy entrepreneurs and executives who already have a full plate of responsibilities. This is where having a coach to guide you through the process can be incredibly beneficial.

A coach provides the support, accountability, and guidance you need to stay on track and ensure that your book is completed in a timely manner. They can help you develop a clear vision for your book, outline your key messages, and create a realistic timeline for getting your ideas on paper. By working with a coach, you can avoid feeling overwhelmed by the enormity of the task and instead focus on achieving your goal of becoming a published author.

In addition to providing support and guidance, a coach helps you improve your writing skills and refine your message.
Furthermore, a coach can help you navigate the publishing process, from choosing the right publishing platform to marketing your book effectively. They can help you understand the nuances of the publishing industry, connect you with editors and publishers, and provide you with strategies for promoting your book to a wider audience. With their expertise and guidance, you can increase your chances of success and ensure that your book reaches its intended audience.

Overall, working with a coach to write a business book is a wise investment in your personal and professional development. By enlisting the help of a coach, you can benefit from their expertise, support, and guidance as you navigate the challenging process of writing and publishing a book. With their help, you can turn your ideas into a successful book that showcases your expertise, builds your credibility, and helps you achieve your personal and professional goals.
