You can post every day. You can post beautiful graphics. You can even get likes. And still sell absolutely nothing. That’s not bad luck. That’s a broken strategy. Because posting is activity. Marketing is intention. Most people confuse the two and then wonder why their books, services, or offers just sit there like a corpse no one wants to claim.

The Big Lie: “Be Consistent and You’ll Grow”

Consistency is great… if you’re consistently doing the right thing. If you’re consistently posting:

random quotes

pretty images

“look at my book” graphics

vague inspirational nonsense

…then all you’re doing is training your audience to scroll past you faster. Consistency without strategy is just noise with a schedule.

What Posting Actually Does (and What It Doesn’t)

Let’s strip this down. Posting does one thing well. It keeps you visible. That’s it. It does NOT:

create demand

position you as an authority

move people toward a decision

make someone care about your book

Visibility without movement is just standing in the middle of a room yelling “I exist.” Cool. Nobody cares.

Marketing Does This Instead

Real marketing has a job. A very specific one. It moves someone from: “I don’t care who you are” to “I need what you’re offering.” That requires structure, not vibes. Marketing:

creates a problem the reader recognizes

shows them the cost of ignoring it

positions your book/service as the solution

tells them exactly what to do next

If your posts aren’t doing that, they’re not marketing. They’re decoration.

Why Your Posts Aren’t Converting

Let’s get a little savage for a second. Most posts fail because they’re written from the creator’s perspective, not the buyer’s.

You’re saying:

“I wrote a book”

“Here’s my cover”

“I’m excited to share this”

Your audience is wondering why they should care. Readers don’t buy books to support you. They buy books because they want escape, knowledge, entertainment, transformation... If your content doesn’t connect to that, it dies.

The Missing Piece: Direction

Most people post without a destination. Every post should answer one question. What is this supposed to make someone do? If the answer is “engage,” you’ve already lost. Engagement is not the goal. Movement is. A post should lead to a click, a sign-up, a purchase. If there are no directions, there are no results.

What to Do Instead (This Is Where It Gets Useful)

Here’s how you turn posting into actual marketing:

1. Start With the Problem: Don’t lead with your product. Lead with pain. Instead of asking a reader to check out your book, tell them what your book offers. That will get their attention.

2. Agitate It a Little: Make them feel it. If nobody cares about your book after you publish it, it’s not because it’s bad. It’s because you didn’t give them a reason to care. Now they’re uncomfortable. Good.

3. Position the Solution: What does your book fulfill? For example, I would tell my potential reader that I wrote Polished Pages to fix the mess that keeps manuscripts from being taken seriously.

4. Tell Them What to Do: Do not be subtle. Tell them: “Grab it here.” or “Read more.” or “Start here.” If you don’t direct them, they leave.

The Reality Check

You don’t need more posts or better ones. You need a reason for people to care. Stop asking: “What should I post today?” Start asking: “What problem am I solving today?” That one shift turns your content from background noise into something that actually sells.

If your social media disappeared tomorrow, would your business survive? If the answer is no, then you’re not marketing. You’re relying on attention you don’t control. Build something that moves people, not just something that gets seen.

If you’ve followed my work for a while, you already know I don’t fit neatly into one creative box. I write children’s books and horror comedy. I design clean nonfiction book covers and create unsettling horror collages. I help authors polish manuscripts—and then I turn around and make art with creepy dolls, ravens, and blood splatter.

Because of that, I recently launched two separate Pinterest accounts, each representing a very different creative persona. This wasn’t about being fancy or extra—it was about clarity, focus, and giving people a better experience when they explore my work.

Here’s what you’ll find in each space.

Wendy Spurlin Art

Creative, instructional, and exploratory

This Pinterest account is tied to my professional identity as Wendy Spurlin: artist, designer, editor, publisher, and creative coach at ArmLin House Productions.

On this account, you’ll see:

Original artwork and design projects

College assignments and learning-based experiments

Abstract art, collage, illustration, and pattern work

Book covers (especially nonfiction and instructional design)

Visual problem-solving and concept-driven art

Inspiration boards used for learning, study, and refinement

This account leans toward process, structure, and growth. It shows how ideas come together, how skills are developed, and how creative disciplines overlap. If you’re an author, designer, or creative professional, this is the account that reflects how I think, build, and teach.

Winnie Jean Howard

Dark, surreal, and unapologetically weird

This Pinterest account represents Winnie Jean Howard, my darker creative persona—the one that thrives on horror, satire, surrealism, and things that are slightly (or very) uncomfortable.

On this account, you’ll find:

Horror collages and digital art

Creepy dolls, monsters, ravens, and creatures

Neon horror, vintage horror aesthetics, and dark surrealism

Horror art inspiration from other artists

Character design and odd portraits

Satirical, unsettling, and macabre visual storytelling

This is not a “how-to” space. It’s a mood, a playground for horror imagery, and a place where fear, humor, and absurdity coexist. It’s intentionally darker, stranger, and less restrained.

Why Separate Them?

Pinterest works best when accounts are clear, focused, and intentional. Mixing instructional design, children’s illustration, nonfiction publishing, and horror collage into one account confuses both viewers and the platform itself.

By separating these worlds:

People know exactly what they’re walking into

Each account can grow its own audience organically

The algorithms have a better chance of understanding the content

I get to create freely without diluting either identity

Most importantly, it respects the audience. Not everyone who wants help publishing a business book also wants to scroll past bloody dolls—and not every horror fan wants clean nonfiction layouts. Now they don’t have to.

What This Means for You

If you follow Wendy Spurlin Art, expect thoughtful, creative, and educational content tied to design, publishing, and artistic growth.

If you follow Winnie Jean Howard, expect dark humor, horror aesthetics, unsettling imagery, and creative chaos (the good kind).

And if you follow both, You get the full picture of how creativity, discipline, and imagination collide in my work.

Choosing the Right Social Media Platforms

For writers, making the right social media choices is key. You should spend your time where it helps most. Think about what you want to achieve and who you want to reach. This will help you pick the best platforms.

Know Your Target Audience

It’s important to know your readers well. What age are they? What are they into? This info helps you find the best social media places. For instance, if you write for young fantasy fans, go for Instagram or TikTok.

Assess Content Fit

Think about the content you’ll share. Does it fit certain platforms better? If you share lots of articles, LinkedIn or Medium are good. If you have pretty pictures, try Pinterest or Instagram. These choices will help you show your work best.

Competitive Analysis

Look at how successful writers use social media. See what works for them. While you want your own style, learning from their success is smart. It can lead you to platforms that are great for writers like you.

Consider Personal Comfort

Your comfort matters too. Some platforms might be easier for you. Think about what you already know. Also, how much time are you willing to learn about new features? Enjoying the platform is key to using it well.

Understanding your audience, content fit, and how competition does it helps. Also, think about what feels right for you. With these factors in mind, you can choose well. The right choices will help you meet readers and other writers online effectively.

Building an Authentic Personal Brand

When connecting on social media, showing your real self is key. People enjoy engaging with someone they can trust. By sharing your writing path, you build a strong connection with the audience.

Showcasing who you truly are helps attract like-minded readers. Here are tips to be more genuine and reach out on social media:

Be Transparent: Share your victories and challenges in writing. This transparency reveals the real you to your readers.

Show Your Personality: Infuse your posts with your humor, interests, and beliefs. This way, readers get to know and relate to you better.

Engage in Conversations: Be active in discussions. Responding to comments shows you appreciate your readers, fostering a sense of community around your work.

Share Behind-the-Scenes Moments: Share glimpses of your writing life or book events. This personal approach lets readers see the writer behind the scenes, forging a closer bond.

Building an authentic personal brand requires dedication. However, it pays off by fostering a loyal reader base. Stay true to yourself, and you'll find support through your writing career.

Consistency in Content Creation

Being consistent in creating content online is key. It helps keep your audience interested. They will look forward to each piece of content you share.

Create a schedule for posting. This makes it easier to organize your work. It ensures you keep sharing useful content with your fans. The more they know what to expect, the more they will want to see more.

To keep your followers interested, understand what they like. This means creating content that meets their needs. By knowing their interests, you can speak directly to them.

Consistency is more than just often posting. It's about adding value and starting important talks with your viewers.

Interaction is also key. Ask questions to get your followers involved. Encourage them to discuss and then listen to their feedback. This makes your audience feel valued. It helps build a strong bond with them.

Try different content types to jazz things up. Videos and live sessions are great ways to keep your audience's attention. They offer new ways for your fans to connect with your content.

Benefits of Consistency in Content Creation:

Builds trust and credibility with your audience

Establishes you as an authority in your niche

Keeps your audience engaged and coming back for more

Strengthens your brand identity and recognition

Boosts your search engine rankings

Being steady in your content creation builds a strong online presence. It also helps you grow a loyal group of followers. So, keep a schedule and create content your fans will love. This will improve your social media influence.

Engaging with Your Audience

Engaging with your audience on social media is vital. Just posting content isn't enough. You must also interact with your readers to create a loyal following. By responding to comments, asking questions, and joining discussions in your field, you make your audience feel appreciated and heard. This engagement builds a sense of community and connection, forming a strong bond between you and your readers.

Replying to comments is crucial. Aim to respond to each person, mentioning their name if possible. This approach shows you value their thoughts and are genuinely interested in their views. It's also an excellent chance to share further insights, related content, or questions to keep the talk flowing.

It's okay to ask your own questions too. Encourage your audience to share their ideas and stories. This step not only boosts interaction but also offers important feedback. It helps you comprehend what your audience wants and needs. By listening and including their feedback in your content, you prove their opinions matter to you. This, in turn, shows your appreciation for their part in your online community.

Think of community-building as a long-term effort. When you create a sense of belonging and interact with your audience, you forge a loyal reader base. They are more likely to support you, share your work, and speak positively about what you do. The depth of meaningful connections you make on social media cannot be overstated. Your audience is more than just a group of numbers; they are the core of your writing experience.

Building a Community

Creating a community involves more than one-on-one talks. It means allowing your readers to connect with one another too. Consider holding virtual events like Q&A sessions or live talks where readers can meet you and each other. You might also want to establish groups or forums. Here, readers can exchange recommendations, discuss your books, and form bonds over their shared appreciation for your writing.

And, thank and highlight your readers. Share their testimonials or reviews praising your work. By doing this, you not only improve your connection with your readers but also encourage others to become part of your community.

Benefits of Engaging with Your Audience

Actions for Engagement

Builds loyalty and trust

Respond to comments promptly and personally

Generates valuable feedback and insights

Ask questions and encourage discussion

Fosters a sense of community and belonging

Create opportunities for readers to connect with one another

Increases visibility and reach

Share testimonials and reviews from satisfied readers

Quality over Quantity

In social media, many focus on gaining more followers and likes. But for writers, it’s quality that really matters online. To stand out, make sure your posts are high-quality. This will make your content more visible and engaging.

Creating deep connections starts with quality. Share content that truly helps your audience. This can be insightful articles, engaging discussions, or fun tales. Each piece you post shows your expertise, building trust.

To keep your content top-notch, remember these tips:

Know your audience: Take time to know who your readers are and what they like. This helps you write content that they find interesting. It keeps them reading and coming back for more.

Be authentic: Stay true to yourself and your writing style. Let your unique personality show in your work. Engaging authentically helps you gain a loyal fan base.

Provide value: Make sure each post offers something good to your readers. Share practical advice, inspiring ideas, or fun stories. Your content should always have a clear goal of helping your audience.

Create visually appealing content: Use images or videos to make your content pop. Pick visuals that match your message and style. They can draw people in.

Tell compelling stories: Stories draw in your audience more than anything. Try sharing personal tales or stories about your work. It helps make a strong connection with your readers.

"Remember, it's not about how much content you produce; it's about the quality of the content and the impact it has on your audience." - Jane Doe, Bestselling Author

Aim for quality in your content. Stand out on social media by offering something great. Always choose to write what truly speaks to your audience. This is more powerful than filling your feed with just okay posts.

Quantity

Quality

More posts

Thoughtful and well-crafted content

Generic content

Content tailored to your audience's interests and needs

Quantity of followers

Engaged and loyal followers

Passive scrolling

Active participation and discussion

Less time per post

Invested time and effort in each post

Choosing quality over quantity will elevate your social media presence. By creating valuable content, you set the stage for a strong and dedicated following. This approach ensures that your audience eagerly anticipates every post you make.

The Power of Visuals

Visual content is key on social media today. It helps tell stories better and connects deeply with people. With photos, videos, and graphics, you can catch attention, show feelings, and stick in people's minds.

Using visuals with your stories makes them more powerful. You know how crucial it is to tell a good story. Mixing in engaging images or videos can really draw your readers in and make your tales come alive.

Visually connecting with others is very effective. Studies show we remember info much better when we see it, rather than just read it. By posting pictures about your writing journey or books, or sharing mood boards that reflect your story’s themes, you make a strong impact. You also spark curiosity.

Visuals are great at evoking emotions. A picture or video can say a lot and help others feel connected to you and what you write. It might be a video showing your writing space or a neat graphic introducing your new book. These can make your audience feel closer to you.

But how do you use visuals well in your writing social media?

Use eye-catching images:

Add striking images to your posts. You can use book covers, meaningful quotes, or well-chosen photos that fit your story's mood. This makes people stop and look.

Share behind-the-scenes moments:

Show your followers your writing life with photos or short videos. This might be your writing desk, a special spot you love to write, or the research you do. Sharing these moments makes a bond with your readers stronger.

Create engaging videos:

Make short videos to talk about your writing process, show book trailers, or answer questions from readers. Videos are a fun and deep way to connect with your audience, giving them a unique view of you and your work.

Using visuals can really boost your storytelling and reach with your audience. So, dive into using more visual content. It will open up new ways to connect with your fans on social media.

Harnessing the Power of Hashtags

Writers can boost their social media presence with hashtags. By adding the right ones, everyone can see your posts. This means more people can read what you write.

Finding the best hashtags means looking at what's trending without overloading. Too many can lead to less engagement. Also, make sure they fit naturally in your posts.

Here are some tips to use hashtags well:

1. Research and Identify Relevant Hashtags

2. Use Hashtags Strategically

Storytelling captures your audience's attention. It helps build a real bond with them. Instead of only promoting what you're selling, talk about what inspired your work. Share the struggles and wins you faced in creating your piece. This personal touch draws in your audience and gets them interested in your works.

Engaging content is not limited to words. Images and videos can be huge assets. As a writer, you can share glimpses into your world with sketches or character clips. These visuals make your story more vivid. They help the audience to feel closer to your work.

"The power of visual content cannot be overstated. Use it to bring your writing to life and engage your audience."

Do you want readers to buy your books? Of course you do. Then don’t just put your books in bookstores, put yourself out there too. Amazon’s Author Central brings both you and your books together in one place that you control. Besides introducing you to Amazon’s customer base, it encourages readers to buy more of your books, and here’s how.

1. Author Follows

Amazon is invested in understanding their customers’ preferences because it results in more sales, and every store wants to sell more products. The Author Follow button is one way Amazon can track what their reader base likes and is more likely to buy. Readers can follow authors from their Author Central page or any of their books’ product pages, but only if the author has an Author Central account. And once a reader follows an author, Amazon will show that author’s books to her in emails and on their website to promote more sales.

Identify the number of followers you have on your Author Central control panel.

Similar to how you would encourage fans to follow your social media accounts and GoodReads author page, you should encourage readers to follow you on Author Central for the reasons previously mentioned. Put a link to the page on your website and include it on your promotional materials. Get your number of followers up, and you will sell more books.

2. Brand Awareness

Your Author Central page reflects your brand as an author. The profile you publish tells readers who you are and what you write. If you are producing a series, customers can easily find the next book or two they’d like to read in highlighted series sections. There are places to tell readers which of your books they should read, along with recommendations for the books you enjoy.

It’s important to note that the author name link on a book’s detail page or in search results directs to an author’s Author Central account. If you don’t set up an Author Central account, this link goes to a page that lists your books mixed with other authors’ books. This means you could lose a sale to another author whose book outshines yours, and I’m sure you don’t want that to happen.

Readers do want to know who you are, including your background, accomplishments, credentials, and that you are a real human. These days, not only do we compete with human authors, we compete against AI more and more. Readers are becoming even more invested in knowing the identity of an author. If they like you, they believe they will like your stories.

3. Google Search Results

Simply stated, Google indexes author page on Amazon. When someone googles your author name, you want all the top search results to be flooded with your website, social media links, and such. More so, direct links to buy your books are better at the top. Since you’ll sell more books on Amazon, it’s best that your Author Central account link be as close to the top as possible after a Google Search. Go google your author name now. Discover where it ranks. Any way that you can increase visibility of your books is a good thing!

4. Book Information Control

There are a number of book information updates you can apply to your books from Author Central: add editorial reviews, update your book descriptions, add author comments to a book page, and more. Editorial reviews are positive testimonials about your book that catch a reader's attention and tell them your book is worth reading. Actively updating your author comments tells both readers and Amazon you are invested in selling books. This option is especially helpful if you have a publisher and a lack of control of your books via KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing).

5. Marketing Materials

Again, if you are traditionally published and do not have access to KDP, the marketing materials that Amazon provides in Author Central are extremely helpful to view your book rankings and manage your marketing needs. In the Sales Ranking report, you’ll find your rankings in the various Amazon marketplaces around the world. There is also a BookScan report available for free on Author Central, which expands a picture of your rankings across other bookstores. Author central also provides easier access to your review, so you can use them in your marketing materials on social media or print.

Finally, Amazon Advertising is accessible from Author Central. This is especially handy for traditionally published authors. If you haven’t already realized this, you won’t sell books unless you advertise on Amazon. Having control over your advertising is important because you also have control over advertising budgets.

Part of being an author is getting your name and face and books out there for all to see. And your Amazon Author Central page is an invaluable tool every author needs to further your exposure. It’s easy to set up and maintain, so make an effort to visit your page and update it frequently.
